The Scandinavian Stand-Out

The Volvo S60 is proof that Swedes build unique cars. Though its platform dates back to 2001 and has its flaws, the S60 is a solid alternative to pricier and less-reliable German sedans.

Like all Volvos, the S60 looks different from other sedans, which is a good thing. Despite only subtle styling changes since its 2001 debut, the S60 remains visually alluring, if not outright seductive, with its arcing roofline. The style is understated, not flashy.

Pronounced "shoulders" at the base of the side windows connect front and back fenders and evoke past Volvos. They create a sculpted look from every angle and can be appreciated each time you approach the vehicle and look down to grab the door handle.

Volvo styling has changed a lot in the last 20 years. "We used to build square cars because they crashed better," says spokesman Dan Johnston. "With stronger metals and advances in design and engineering for safety, we can now make a car look better and crash better than before." While the S40, S60 and S80 all look similar, the midsize S60 seems the best proportioned.

Our test vehicle's $450 metallic silver paint and low-profile tires on multispoke 17-inch wheels gave the car visual punch.
